Artist Statement
As a lyrical abstractionist, I create large-scale, color-forward paintings, building atmosphere and emotional resonance through fluid gestures, intuitive marks, and layered fields of color and light. Working mainly across gestural abstraction, but also color field and assemblage, my practice leverages the experiential affect of nuanced color and immersive scale. •• Following an impromptu return to painting in 2017, I became enamored with the process of action painting as a meditative escape and the respite I discovered in abstract forms, textures, and tones. My compositions often evoke impressions of deconstructed landscapes, but rather than depicting specific places, my paintings evoke the emotional, hazy residue of remembered spaces — a nostalgic feeling of familiarity that defies clear recollection. Working from an intersection of memory and emotion, my work invites others to share in moments of pause, reflection, and quiet emotional connection. •• I ground my paintings on raw, unprimed textiles. The nubby, imperfect, and unpredictable surface texture forces me to surrender control to the initial marks as they immediately and permanently stain the surface. I embrace and celebrate the happenstance, employing intuitive, gestural marks that connect elements as I work my way to a conclusion. •• Color serves as emotional language and therapeutic gesture throughout my work. My paintings always begin with a singular “color experience” intention and rely on tonal atmospheres to contribute nuanced spaces for visual respite. I embrace a wide range of media, utilizing the juxtaposition of disparate materials and dimensional layering to subtly shift the perception, light reflectivity, and luminosity of the color experience. •• Above all, I hope for an experience that captivates and immerses my audience.
